Sonia Gandhi: Need to strengthen social audit of MGNREGS

Congress President Sonia Gandhi recently while speaking at a function at Vigyan Bhawan to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme's Five year praised the Scheme but at the same time put a word of caution. She said, “Social Audit should be further strengthened. I understand that through the help of Women Self help Groups and NGO's it can be build stronger. I feel that MGNREGA has the capacity to improve farm productivity and bring in more Green revolution. Its budget of 40 thousand crores should be utilized in improving the quality of the land owned by marginal farmers and to provide them water for irrigation because such farmers possess 80% of our farmland.” Congress President congratulated District administration officers, MNREGA workers, employees of post offices and Sarpanchs who were present in the function. She praised them as the living examples of the success of the scheme, their hard work and dedication which helped in the success of this scheme as a result of which crores of our people are now having a better future.
