Pointing to apathy of Mayawati towards the condition of women in the state, Congress (I) General Secretary
Rahul Gandhi has slammed her for the bad state of affairs of women in Uttar Pradesh.
“Although this state is ruled by a woman chief minister, there is no one to hear the voice of women,” said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Jaunpur as part of his Congress campaign in the recently held assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi added that that Congress (I) made a provision for representation of women in panchayats but it is not being implemented in its true spirit in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress MP then cited an example and said, “I was told by an old woman how her agricultural land was forcibly acquired for some builders. When the builder demanded immediate vacation of the plot, the woman complained to the local police station but it had no effect. Police not only refused to intervene but even went to the extent of setting fire to the standing crop on the poor woman's land.”
Assuring the people that Congress would continue to work for the welfare of all including women, Rahul Gandhi had urged people to support Congress and help it to form a government in UP.
