Sonia Gandhi at Anantnag: Congress worked for Jammu Kashmir development without any bias

Congress President Sonia Gandhi struck an emotional chord with the people of Jammu and Kashmir by praising them for taking part in the ongoing assembly polls with enthusiasm. While addressing a Congress poll rally in Anantnag , Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said it was her party that had worked for the development of the state without any bias. "It is easy to showcase dreams, but the Congress party actually worked for the development of everyone without any kind of bias and keeping the ground realities in mind," Sonia Gandhi said. "When Ghulam Nabi Azad was Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, the state witnessed an earthquake, the relief work was faster than what is being done after floods. Why is the relief work after floods slow?" asked Sonia Gandhi.

Jammu and Kashmir: Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi assures full support to flood-affected people

Anantnag (J&K): Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi visited Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since it was struck by devastating floods on Monday and assured that their party is with the people of the state and assured all help to mitigate their suffering."Congress party is with you. We will take up your issues with the Government and help you in whichever way we can," Rahul said while addressing a gathering of flood affected people at Dehruna village. He said the party shares the grief of the people and has been helping them since the floods hit the Valley. "Our organisation, including Congress party, Youth and Women Congress, NSUI, RGF and local leaders have been working here since the floods hit. It is a time of grief and we came here to see for ourselves (the destruction caused by floods). We will visit other places as well," said Rahul Gandhi.

Congress vice President Rahul Gandhi, along with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the UMEED programmme for the empowerment of women in central Badgam district in Jamju and Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi said that active participation of women is a must for holistic development of the society. The Congress Vice President argued that Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra developed because once women there were empowered and they actively participated in development programmes.

Congress vice President Rahul Gandhi, along with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the UMEED programmme for the empowerment of women in central Badgam district in Jamju and Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi said that active participation of women is a must for holistic development of the society.
The Congress Vice President argued that Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra developed because once women there were empowered and they actively participated in development programmes. Rahul Gandhi also said that Congress-led UPA government at the Centre had sanctioned Rs.750 crore under UMEED to the state to organise self-help groups (SHG) of women for addressing their economic challenges and curb social evils like drug addiction and female foeticide. Rahul Gandhi added that the UMEED initiative had gone a long way in making women confident and enabling them to stand on their own feet.
The young congress leader said that he had visited Jammu and Kashmir last year and met youth at Kashmir University, and invited them to visit Amethi and see the benefits that women received from the UMEED, just so a similar one could be taken up in Jammu and Kashmir. "I took Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with me to Amethi so that he could also take a view of the success of this programme", said Rahul Gandhi, adding that the trip had culminated in the launch of UMEED in Jammu and Kashmir. "We can provide help, but you have to work yourselves to achieve the goals of welfare, social justice and development", he said.
Omar Abdullah, speaking on the occasioin, underlined the role of women in curbing female infanticide and drug addiction.
The chief minister said the empowerment of women was an area his government would focus on, and it was with this end in view that 33 percent reservation in Panchayat Elections had been introduced for women. He lauded the women of the state, saying they were participating actively in programmes meant for them, and that the candidates in the seats reserved for women in the panchayat elections demonstrated great courage and enthusiasm.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, and in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Mohan Prakash, and the president of the state Congress committee and MP Saif-ud-Din Soz, and local legislator Aga Ruhulla Mehdi were also present at the function. Omar Abdullah and Rahul Gandhi also interacted with a group of women from Lar, Khan Sahib, Basholi and Chenani blocks in the state who had just returned from a visit to Andhra Pradesh to observe the success of UMEED.

Under the UMEED programme 90,000 self-help groups linking nine lakh women in 143 blocks covering 4,098 panchayats of the state would be organised in five years to address the concerns that women face in the state, and attempt collectively to improve their economic conditions.
