Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated the nation's first all-women bank -- the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB)- in Mumbai on Tuesday in the presence of Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi said that this was an appropriate tribute to the memory of Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. The Congress President also distributed the bank-kits to the first five account holders of the new bank.

A series of functions are being organised across the country to mark the occasion. The day is also observed as the 'Children's Day' in India as Pandit Nehru had great affection for children.
