During BJP-led NDA government Ministry of Defence became the hub of corruption. Deals and kick-back were struck at the official residence of the Defence Minister. Comptroller and Auditor General’s report found scams in purchase of more than a dozen items during Operation Vijay code name for Kargil war. The worst case was purchase of expired ammunition, valued at Rs. 91.86 crores, and purchases in excess of requirement/authorization aggregating Rs. 107.97 crores. In an another case ammunition worth Rs. 342.37 crores was contracted for import on grounds of operational emergency, even though it was being produced in Indian ordinance factories and was available in the country itself. Thus though critical supplies of clothing, ammunition and arms could not reach the troops during the operation Vijay, an amount of Rs. 1,046 crores in foreign exchange was spent fruitlessly. This confirms that BJP-led used the occasion to enter into dubious contract deals and thereby cornered thousands of crores for itself by indulging into corruption. By the very same token BJP-led NDA government caused loss of thousand of crores to the country.
